#JOBYPHOTO – Winner

Here’s Our Winner Of Joby’s Smartphone

Gorillapod Range Plus £500 Photo Competition

Over the last month or so we’ve been running a competition using the hashtag #JobyPhoto across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to give all aspiring skate photographers a chance to win three awesome products from Joby’s new phone-friendly range, plus £500 in cash…

The standard of entries, and the sheer number of them has far outstretched what we could have hoped for, so firstly a big thank you to everyone who got involved and shared their photography with us.
After great deliberation, a unanimous decision was reached and the winner of the Joby #JobyPhoto contest is officially Tim Smith with the photo you can see below.

The Winner – Tim Smith

As we said, it wasn’t easy picking a winner but the combination of lighting, composition, angle and the architecture involved in this Tim Smith photo of George ‘Frank’ Sinclair just made this shot stand out above all the other entries. A truly classic-looking skate photo, shot at night at a spot where you’re lucky to get even 5 tries before getting the boot. It delivers the excitement of night-time street skating along with a sense of the impending speed as Frank lands his one-footed ollie into the bank at the side of stairs and fires off at high speed into the night. A perfect combination of everything we love about skate photography. Big up.

THE BEST OF THE REST

Arturs Pavlovs

Architecture is a crucial necessity for urban skateboard photography. Lines, perspectives, new vs old, foreground, background, buldings and concrete, rider and trick. Gotta take care of all these things to create a visually rich photography. This is skateboarding at it's purest form. #Skate #Skateboard #Skateboarding #ActionSportsPhotography #RedBullPhotography #KickFlip #Riga #Latvia #Canon #Fomei #FomeiFlash #SportsPhotography #Hypersync #HighSpeedSync

This image with its vertical white lines sucks you in to the main focus of Arturs Nesaule doing what could possibly be a regular kickflip coming towards the camera. The juxtaposition of the classic architecture and the modern paving gives the image a real sense of skateboarding in the centre of a city.

This Berlin based building / spot always lends itself to rad skate images – its symmetrical design and brutal angles hold your interest until you find the skater within. Klomdang Efe Elver bombdrops from the rail into a hell ride.

Ash Wilson

Another no-brainer – that spot alone makes this Ash Wilson shot of Joe McComb stand out. Hardflip, God knows where with the added bonus of crazy-looking geometry strewn across the foreground.

You can’t beat a good fullpipe photo and this particular find looks massive! The unnamed skater caught at the pinnacle level on black and white film along with the added angles of the viewing platform make this a little bit different from your regular pipe photo. Great work!

We’ve seen this traditional freestyle skater popping up on a lot of Manchester Urbis Instagram clips recently so it’s rad to see a photo submission featuring an often-overlooked type of skating going on at one of the UK’s most famous street skating spots. The focus on his face screams at you in this one.

Matt Clarke

@callum_mcrobbie ! Available as a poster/zone with the new @blastskates decks! (Done wearing the Pink @getlesta tee too…)

Another awesome fullpipe photo but this time an underground find which creates a completely different feeling of cold claustrophobia and begs the question ‘how the hell did they get in and out of there?’ Plus, look at how rough the floor is! – Callum McRobbie what a beast, as is Mr Matt Clarke. #catlitter FTW

Veliko Balabanov

There’s a lot going on here in this submission from Sofia, Bulgaria. Heavy slam potential, and with the filmer risking his lens in the foreground, the atmosphere just gives this one a moody sense of the inevitable. Classic shot-from-beneath angle of a scary trick.

Rok Cunder

Ollie, Trzin, Slovenia. ????@rokcunder #skateboarding #pendrekmag #slovenia #ljubljana #shralpin #skateclipsdaily #skatecrunch #skatecrunchmag #metrogrammed #skatelife #instaskate #skateeverydamnday #jobyphoto

Great and understated use of the ‘attaching lights to a deck’ scenario from @rokcunder here. The act of an ollie has pulled the singular bulb trails into a sine wave pattern which looks rad when paired with Marko Fogy’s fruity outfit.

This crooks at Birmigham’s Fastlands was shot by young skater and photographer Charlie Elmer at the weekend during the No Comply Network Jam. Hot off the press toe-control by Henry Fox at a classic UK location.

A little piece of Australia high up in the arctic circle. I half expected to see koala bears in little puffer jackets up in the trees ????

Nice to finish on a classic subject for skateboarding – ‘the age old hillbomb’.
Another near symmetrical gem pulling you into the skater’s high speed journey along the desolate wavy road. This one with its autumnal feel reminds us that winter is on its way. Bah!
