Spitfire – Skateboard Wheel Review – Formula Four Lock Ins 52mm

An overview of Spitfire wheels along with a 'Formula Four Lock Ins' wheel review

Arguably the most recognisable wheel brand in skateboarding, Spitfire Wheels began life as part of Deluxe Distribution in the late 80’s. The distinctive ‘Bighead’ logo designed by legendary skate artist Kevin Ancell has been the face of the brand since its earliest incarnation and is one of the most recognisable and heavily tattooed logos in skateboarding.

Spitfire Wheels has always prided itself on offering one of the biggest ranges of wheels, in terms of size and wheel shapes, on the market. The current Spitfire Wheels range focus on two main durometer readings at 99a and 101a firmly aimed at the modern street and park skater.

The Spitfire Formula Four Lock Ins 52mm 99a wheels that you can see here use Spitfire’s tried and tested Formula Four Performance Urethane that promises anti stick slide, enhanced abrasion resistance and with a construction that holds size and shape for longer. Spitfire’s wheels are also designed and manufactured in the USA by the brand itself to guarantee consistency of product.

At 52mm in diameter you’d be advised to pick a low to mid profile truck to run alongside these particular wheels, although Spitfire also manufacture the Lock Ins in a 53mm and a 55mm diameter model.

Technically speaking, Spitfire have experimented with an asymmetrical shape with the Lock In series of wheels with one side of the wheel offering a conical cut profile and the other with a straight edge cut. The idea behind this is to give you extra scope to lock your wheels and trucks into grinds better. This is a new innovation from Spitfire, which has proved to be highly popular with their already loyal customer base.

The Spitfire Formula Four Lock Ins also feature a wider riding surface than the ‘classic shape’ with 21.5 mm of on-the-ground surface contact, as opposed to the 15.5 mm of a similarly sized classic Spitfire.

Spitfire is so confident of their wheels that they offer a 100% guarantee in the rare event of any manufacturing defects and will send you a new replacement set of wheels no questions asked. Read more about the terms of the Spitfire guarantee HERE
