‘War and Rees’ – Nottingham DIY scene video

Signals from the ever productive Notts DIY scene

Top Youtube uploader CARLOSi (the person behind the full length version of Hating Life to hit the web, which we posted last year) has come through with another gem in the form of the ‘War and Rees’ video focusing on Nottingham DIY spots and featuring a whole host of local rippers making the most of dual skater built paradises.

Nottingham’s original long serving DIY haven was demolished in order to make way for a building project which has yet to materialise, leaving the now empty space teaming with used needles rather than skateboarders. Top marks to the clearly far sighted Nottingham council for realising the dangers posed by people building concrete and having fun in a space traditionally reserved for nodding out and soiling yourself, we salute you! The first half of War and Rees focuses on the much missed DIY space and those who shredded it, whilst the second half turns a lens to the similarly destroyed Nottingham based project ‘Byrneside’.

Fuck the clowns responsible for removing these labours of love anyway; every time they uproot our spots we will make them rise again, like weeds in their Babylonian fields choking their soil with grassroots defiance, like Easter Island carved monuments to skateboarding which even when demolished will live on in video form and pass the seeds of subversion to the next generation. DIY forever!

Featuring a wide array of Notts heads including Ian Rees, Alex Hallford, Luke Humphries, Jacob Rumsey, Jack Allison, Tom Shaw-Weston, Greg Hollingsworth, Matt Vardy, Simon Bernacki, Mitchell Harle, Fred Naylor, Stu Zombie, Adam Kolakovic, Simon Devenport, Dave Bevan, Jonny Robson, Daniel O’Neill, Tom Quigley, Owen Byrne, Kane Cunliffe, Ellis Blake, Vic Camilleri, Kevin Harris and Nathan Symes.

For more visual stimulus resulting from Nottingham guerrilla builds, hit up Varial Magazine for their one off zine ‘One of these days, these days are gunna end…

“In a new adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novel, a skate scene experiences life, love and loss against the mangled backdrop of Nottingham’s DIY spots.”
