Transworld Skateboarding‘s semi-regular immersions into the murky history of skate media ephemera come up trumps (is that still a positive turn of phrase these days?) once again, this time with John Cardiel discussing the minutae of the legendary ‘Cardiollie’ gap at Embarcedero. Tobin Yelland‘s photo for Cards’ 1993 Big Brother Magazine interview opened up a new line at an already heavily rinsed EMB, which in spite of the heavy urethane traffic passing through the legendary plaza would not be stepped to again until Scott Bourne KO’d himself attempting it in 1998 and Jamie Thomas made it with the added roll off the drop and into an almost non existent run out in 1999 for Misled Youth.

Transworld’s Mackenzie Eisenhour has gone all in on the details (as is to be expected if you’ve been following his Origins series on TWS), with the original Tobin Yelland photo backed up by scans of the full Big Brother interview as well as clips from both Scott Bourne’s slam and Jamie Thomas’ make. “Well, Tobin and I had been hanging out a lot and he was shooting a bunch of photos for Big Brother at the time. I had just gotten Skater of the Year for Thrasher, and Big Brother hit up Tobin for an interview for their magazine. So we were trying to stack up some tricks for it. I remember talking to Rick Ibaseta before and he had mentioned to me that he had looked at the gap going the other way while they were smoking a blunt and drinking a 40. So in desperate need for photos for the interview and with Rick’s blessing I decided to go check it out.”
